Abstract:

Materials relating to construction of the Marin tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and Carquinez Bridge; the Oakland-Alameda Posey Tube; and parts of various other projects, including Middle Fork bridge on the temporary Oroville-Quincy access road for Oroville Dam, and a streetcar bridge over Sausal Creek for Park Boulevard Co. in Oakland, Calif. Most sets of drawings are incomplete. Also includes drawings done by Schirmer in 1917 for a class at Oakland Technical High School. Photocopies of his obituary notices from 1994 have been added to the collection.

Structural engineer, born in Oakland, Calif.; graduate of University of California, Berkeley. Served as Project engineer for numerous Bay Area bridge and highrise construction projects, as well as the Empire State Building and George Washington Bridge in New York, among many others. Retired as general sales manager for Bethlehem Steel Company at age 65, although he worked until almost 80 as a regional engineer for the American Institute of Steel Construction and a consultant.
